The goal of this project was to evaluate replacement refrigerants for BYU Idaho's central chiller system if the existing R134a refrigerant were no longer available. The existing refrigeration cycle was analyzed using the measured operating conditions, and alternative cycles using R1234yf and R290 were modeled to provide approximately 13 million BTU per hour of cooling. Each refrigerant was compared based on operating pressures, mass flow rate, compressor work, coefficient of performance, safety, and compatibility with the existing system.
The analysis found that thermodynamic performance alone was not enough to determine a suitable replacement. R290 provided strong refrigeration performance but its high flammability created safety concerns for a system of that size. The alternative refrigerants also required different operating pressures and equipment considerations compared with the existing R134a system. Overall, the project demonstrated that replacing a refrigerant requires balancing efficiency with safety, operating conditions, and the cost and complexity of modifying existing equipment.
